Welcome to our Local Governors’ Page

All schools in England have a Governing Body and as ACE Academy we have a Board of Directors for the Academy and a Local Governing Body.  This body is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the Academy.  A key role is to support, to challenge, to ask questions and ultimately to represent the Academy community.

The Local Governing Body works in close partnership with the Board of Directors, Principal and staff.  Whilst the Principal is, of course, responsible for the day to day running of the Academy, the governors are involved with such things as staffing, curriculum, buildings and finance.  It ensures the Academy functions well and maintains the proper range of academic and social objectives.

Membership of the Local Governing Body is made up of 2 Parent Governors, 2 Staff Governors and 2 Community Governors.  The governing body meets a least once each term with additional sub-committees which meet more frequently.

Election of Parent Governors

When a parent governor vacancy occurs, parents are notified through the Academy newsletter.

Every school has a governing body, which includes a number of categories of governors including parent governors. All schools have between three and seven parent governors who are elected to serve for a period between one and four years, though they may resign at any time.

Together with the Principal, the governing body has overall responsibility for the running of the Academy. Governors are involved in deciding academy policies, allocating the budget and appointing staff. No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the Academy and be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work. In order to support governors in their work, full training is provided.

In our Academy, parent governors serve for a term of office for 4 years. The full governing body normally meets once a term usually at 4pm.

If a parent would like to stand for election, or to nominate someone else, when a vacancy arises, they will be invited to provide, with his/her nomination, a short personal statement (maximum 100 words). The statement should only include biographical information, your reasons for wanting to be a parent governor and the contribution you believe you can make to the governing body.

If the number of nominations received is equal, or less than, the number of vacancies, the nominees will automatically be elected as parent governs. If, however, there are more nominations than vacancies, an election will be held and copies of the personal statements will be sent to all parents. Two weeks will be allowed for the return of ballot papers.

Each parent will have one vote for each vacancy, no matter how many children he or she has at the Academy.

Because appointment as an Academy governor will give access to children, there is currently a requirement for governors to undertake a DBS police check.
